Sedona Main
Street Program nominates the Main Street Sedona Banners for Best
Public/Private Partnership. In late 2006, a streetscape enhancement
project was completed in the Sedona Main Street District. One of the
new amenities added to the District was pedestrian lighting via thirty
(30) City-installed street light poles. Our City also invested in
banner brackets for a future community event banner program.
Sedona Main
Street Program immediately seized the opportunity to implement Main
Street banners in an effort to help identify the “downtown” and create
a sense of place. The banner design & text was created by the
Promotions Committee volunteers and staff of Sedona Main Street
Program. Merchants and property owners attending a SMSP Community
Forum also gave feedback.
Through
negotiations with the City, at least some of the banners are on
display year-round, intermixed with event banners as scheduled; when
there are no events/banners to display, the Main Street “sense of
place” banners are displayed on all 30 street light poles along Hwy.
89A in Uptown.
The Main Street
Sedona banners speak to pedestrian and vehicular traffic, including
residents, employees and visitors in the millions annually. They
create an image of vitality and a sense of place, provide visual
interest and send a call to action message in an aesthetically
pleasing manner.
Gateway banners
are on display all year round and they display different messages on
each side (“Welcome” on the entry side and “Come Back Soon” on the
departure side). The remaining 26 banners display a call to action.
“Shop & Dine”, “Stay & Enjoy”, “Tour & Explore”, “Relax & Rejuvenate”
draw attention and direct viewers to the primary businesses in our
District. All the “sense of place” banners incorporate consistent and
unifying design elements: our unique Main Street Sedona logo,
identical text font, and a consistent layout. The reach, or number of
impressions, is estimated at 25 million impressions. This is based on
the estimated 2.5 million visitors per year and a ten-year life
expectancy for the banners.

The icing on
the cake is that our Main Street Sedona logo, the consistent design
element in all the banners was designed and donated to our Program by
Tom & Johnny Johnson. These creative and generous brothers, from
Sedona Publishing Company, are longstanding Sedona Main Street Program
supporters and the logo they created won the AZ Main Street Award
Winner for Best Promotional Materials in 1997!
The strong
partnerships and enormous marketing impact of the Main Street Sedona
banners make it a winning Public Private Partnership.
