Sedona Main
Street Program enthusiastically nominates Janeen Trevillyan for
Arizona Main Street Individual of the Year. She has served Sedona Main
Street Program many years as a Board Liaison of Sedona Historical
Society and member of the Design Committee and is now a Board
Director. Janeen truly understands the importance of supporting our
Program, as evidenced by she and husband, David, becoming members even
before buying a house and moving to Sedona in 1999.
In the past two
years alone, Janeen made five major contributions to the success,
livability, and recognition of our Main Street District. First, as
Chairwoman of Sedona’s Historic Preservation Commission, she’s
organized multiple activities to celebrate National Preservation Month
in May each year, including the inaugural placement of plaques on
several historic buildings, plus a walking tour of Historic Uptown (in
the Main Street District) and a self-guided walking tour brochure in
partnership with our Program. Second, she helped organize the Jordan
Road Character District business owners and facilitated the production
and distribution of a brochure that emphasizes the interaction between
current businesses and the rich heritage of this area in our
District. Third, she spearheaded a public awareness program to alert
the community about Sedona’s most endangered historic places and
solutions for their protection – many located within our Main Street
District. Fourth, in August 2007, the “Images of Sedona” book she
co-authored with Lisa Schnebly Heidinger (yes, our City namesake’s
granddaughter, Sedona Schnebly) was published; it includes over 200
photos of Sedona’s earliest settlers she culled from Sedona Historical
Society archives, and chronicles the area’s agriculture, orchard,
ranching, movie, and development history that began primarily is our
Main Street District. Fifth and finally, Janeen was instrumental in
the successful 2008 designation of the Hummingbird House/Hart Store
(see 2005 AZMS Finalist for Best Historic Preservation Project) to the
National Register of Historic Places. In celebration of this
recognition, Janeen made sure that Historic Preservation month
included an open house and tour of Hummingbird House on May 16th.
Many of these
accomplishments are the culmination of Janeen’s nine (9) intense years
of dedication to making sure Sedona’s history occupies a significant
place in its present and future. As part of that, Janeen has been a
longstanding and magnanimous contributor to Sedona Main Street Program
work plans and efforts, logging over 1700 volunteer hours since July
2003 alone with over 820 hours in just these past two years. For many
years, Janeen has written one or more educational articles for each
and every SMSP newsletter and volunteered at our events. Our Jordan
Road Pioneer Pathway, an ongoing Public/Private Partnership project
and AZMS grant recipient, was Janeen’s brainchild and she continues to
help us with its’ creation through history stories on it’s bronze
plaques and the acquisition of private partners to enhance the Jordan
Road sidewalk. She was a major contributor to the Sedona Main Street
Character Districts and Design Manual, and continues to provide input
on development reviews. Janeen has helped create a longstanding
partnership between Sedona Historical Society and Sedona Main Street
Program that has only grown stronger every year. She has been our
representative to the AZ Historic Preservation Conference and our
resource for all historic preservation issues.
These are the
words Janeen recently wrote in announcing to the SMSP membership that
she was willing to serve as a voting Board Director:
“I am committed to SMSP's mission
with particular interest in the history stories of the District, the
historic buildings within the District, and the goal of preserving and
enhancing our District's special "sense of place".
In addition to
her responsibilities as a voting Board Director of Sedona Main Street
Program and active Design Committee member, Janeen is a trustee and
the historian for Sedona Historical Society, member of the Sedona
Historic Preservation Commission, member of the board of the Arizona
State Museum Association and serves on the Arizona Women’s Heritage
Trail Committee.
For all these
reasons, we believe Janeen is Arizona Main Street’s 2008 Individual of
the Year.
